Why it occurs
- Recurrent aphthosis
- Infection (herpes, candidiasis)
- Deficits (iron, B12, folic)
- Behçet's disease or IBD
- Drug reaction
Initial workup
Oral inspection, blood count and ferritin/B12/folic; serologies if they are recurrent.
red flags
Single oral ulcer that does not heal in >2-3 weeks → rule out neoplasia; canker sores + genital ulcers → Behçet.
Standard management
- Topical antiseptics/anesthetics — local relief
- Topical corticosteroid — intense or recurrent canker sores
