  • Cervical osteoarthritis
  • Whiplash
  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Meningismus (if fever)

Initial workup

Cervical and neurological examination; X-ray or MRI only if there is a deficit or alarm.

red flags

Cervicalgia + fever and neck stiffness, or neurological deficit in the arms → urgent study.

Standard management

  • Paracetamol/NSAID — analgesia
  • Muscle relaxant — spasm, short duration
