Initial workup

Explore effusion, ligaments and menisci; x-ray if there is blockage or trauma.

red flags

Hot, red and very painful knee with fever → septic arthritis (urgent arthrocentesis).

Standard management

  • Paracetamol/NSAID — analgesia
  • Colchicine — yes gout attack
