Epistaxis

Specialty: Respiratory.

  • nosebleed
  • blood from the nose

Why it occurs

  • Local trauma / dryness
  • HTA
  • Coagulation disorders / anticoagulants
  • Rhinitis
  • Neoplasia (rare)

Initial workup

Compression and assess bleeding point; blood pressure; coagulation if recurrent/anticoagulated.

red flags

Abundant epistaxis, bilateral or that does not subside with compression, or on unstable anticoagulation → urgency.

Standard management

  • Compression + local measurements — 1st line; clogging if it does not give way
  • Control BP / review anticoagulation — if applicable
