Why it occurs
- Viral infection
- Bacterial infection (UTI, otitis, pneumonia)
- Sepsis/meningitis
Initial workup
Assess age: <3 months = sepsis study; look for focus, urine strip.
red flags
Child under 3 months with fever, bad appearance, petechial rash or refusal of food → urgency.
Standard management
- Anti-thermal by weight — paracetamol/ibuprofen
- Antibiotic if focus/risk — according to protocol
