Initial workup

Look for signs of heart failure; proteins, kidney and liver function; evaluate drugs.

red flags

Bilateral edema with dyspnea, orthopnea and crackles → decompensated heart failure.

Standard management

  • Treat the cause — diuretic if overload; compression stockings in venous insufficiency
