Facial swelling

Why it occurs

  • Angioedema/allergy
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Hypothyroidism (myxedema)
  • Infection (cellulitis, sinusitis)
  • Superior vena cava syndrome

Initial workup

Rule out angioedema and anaphylaxis (airway); evaluate renal or vena cava cause.

red flags

Facial swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing (glottis edema) → anaphylaxis: urgent adrenaline.

Standard management

  • Antihistamine ± corticosteroid — allergic angioedema
  • Treat the cause — renal, thyroid, infectious
