  • Excess insulin/antidiabetics
  • Fasting
  • Alcohol
  • Adrenal insufficiency

Initial workup

Capillary and venous glycemia; treat immediately; review antidiabetics and Whipple triad.

red flags

Hypoglycemia with low level of consciousness or seizure → immediate treatment.

Standard management

  • Oral glucose — conscious
  • IV glucose / glucagon — with altered consciousness
