Initial workup

Arthrocentesis with study of the fluid (cells, crystals, culture).

red flags

Hot joint with fever → septic arthritis: urgency (destroys the joint).

Standard management

  • Urgent antibiotic if septic — do not delay
  • NSAID/colchicine — gout crisis
