Why it occurs

  • Otitis Externa
  • Suppurative otitis media (tympanic perforation)
  • Foreign body
  • Cholesteatoma
  • CSF otorrhea (trauma)

Initial workup

Otoscopy; distinguish otitis externa/media; crop if unresponsive.

red flags

Otorrhea after head trauma (possible CSF), or with fever and affectation of general condition → urgent evaluation.

Standard management

  • Ear drops (antibiotic ± corticosteroid) — external/suppurative otitis
  • Analgesia — pain control
