Why it occurs

  • Asthma
  • Exacerbated COPD
  • Bronchiolitis (infants)
  • Heart failure (cardial asthma)
  • Foreign body

Initial workup

Auscultation, SatO₂, spirometry/peak-flow; Chest x-ray if in doubt.

red flags

Wheezing with cyanosis, inability to speak or auscultatory silence → urgency.

Standard management

  • Inhaled bronchodilator (SABA) — rescue salbutamol
  • Inhaled/oral corticosteroid — control or crisis
