Berlin Definition of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Grades the distress by the PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio measured with at least 5 cmH₂O of positive pressure at the end of expiration. It includes correction for barometric pressure, essential in high-altitude cities where the uncorrected ratio overdiagnoses.

Required inputs

The inputs this calculator asks for inside the app.
VariableExample value
Arterial PaO₂ (mmHg)80
FiO₂ (fraction, 0.21 to 1.0)0.6
PEEP or CPAP applied (cmH₂O)8
Altitude above sea level (meters)0
Onset in the week following a known insult or respiratory worsening (temporal criterion)
Bilateral opacities not explained by effusion, atelectasis or nodules
Edema not explained exclusively by heart failure or volume overload

Run the calculation in the app

This page explains the score but does not run it. In Epistemis, the calculator validates units, flags values outside physiological ranges, and provides the interpretation that a number alone cannot convey.
