Initial workup

Dectal examination (prostate), sediment and urinary flow; PSA and ultrasound if applicable.

red flags

Total inability to urinate with pain and bladder ballooning → acute retention (urgent catheterization).

Standard management

  • Alpha blocker (tamsulosin) — prostatic symptoms
  • 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor — large prostate, long term
