  • Viral pharyngitis (majority)
  • Streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis
  • Mononucleosis
  • Reflux

Initial workup

Pharyngotonsillar examination; Centor criteria; rapid streptococcus test.

red flags

Odynophagia + drooling, trismus, muffled voice or dyspnea → abscess/epiglottis: airway urgency.

Standard management

  • Analgesia (paracetamol/NSAID) — symptomatic
  • Penicillin/amoxicillin — only if confirmed streptococcal (Centor criteria)
