Why it occurs

  • Acute otitis media
  • Otitis Externa
  • Tubal dysfunction
  • Referred (TMJ, pharynx)

Initial workup

Otoscopy; assess otitis externa/media; rule out referred cause.

red flags

Otalgia + retroauricular swelling, facial paralysis or affectation of general condition → complication (mastoiditis).

Standard management

  • Analgesia (paracetamol/ibuprofen) — pain control
  • Amoxicillin — otitis media with antibiotic criteria
  • Ear drops — otitis externa
