Why it occurs

  • Foreign body/corneal erosion
  • Uveitis
  • Acute glaucoma
  • Scleritis

Initial workup

Visual acuity, fluorescein staining; measure IOP if glaucoma is suspected.

red flags

Intense pain with red eye, fixed pupil in middle mydriasis and blurred vision → acute glaucoma: urgency.

Standard management

  • According to cause — do not use corticosteroids without ruling out herpes/ulcer
