Initial workup
ECG, chest x-ray and SatO₂; D-dimer/angio-CT according to probability of PE.
red flags
Pleuritic pain with sudden dyspnea, tachycardia or hypoxemia → rule out PE or pneumothorax.
Standard management
- Treat the cause — anticoagulate if PE; drainage if tension pneumothorax
