Odynophagia

Why it occurs

  • Pharyngotonsillitis
  • Esophagitis (infectious, due to reflux or pills)
  • Esophageal candidiasis (immunocompromized)

Initial workup

Pharyngeal examination; Centor criteria; evaluate abscess if there is lockjaw or hoarse voice.

red flags

Intense odynophagia with drooling, dyspnea or muffled voice → suspicion of abscess/epiglottis (urgency).

Standard management

  • Analgesia — pain relief
  • Antifungal/antiviral — infectious esophagitis according to cause
