Why it occurs
- Pharyngotonsillitis
- Esophagitis (infectious, due to reflux or pills)
- Esophageal candidiasis (immunocompromized)
Initial workup
Pharyngeal examination; Centor criteria; evaluate abscess if there is lockjaw or hoarse voice.
red flags
Intense odynophagia with drooling, dyspnea or muffled voice → suspicion of abscess/epiglottis (urgency).
Standard management
- Analgesia — pain relief
- Antifungal/antiviral — infectious esophagitis according to cause
