Initial workup
Visual acuity, redness pattern and pupil; stain with fluorescein; refer if there is pain or visual loss.
red flags
Red eye with severe pain, loss of vision or fixed pupil → acute glaucoma/uveitis: urgency.
Standard management
- Artificial tears — irritation/dry eye
- Topical antihistamine — allergic conjunctivitis
- Topical antibiotic — bacterial conjunctivitis
