Initial workup

Visual acuity, redness pattern and pupil; stain with fluorescein; refer if there is pain or visual loss.

red flags

Red eye with severe pain, loss of vision or fixed pupil → acute glaucoma/uveitis: urgency.

Standard management

  • Artificial tears — irritation/dry eye
  • Topical antihistamine — allergic conjunctivitis
  • Topical antibiotic — bacterial conjunctivitis
