Why it occurs

  • Peripheral neuropathy (diabetes)
  • Nerve compression (carpal tunnel, radiculopathy)
  • B12 deficiency
  • Stroke/TIA
  • Ionic alterations (calcium)

Initial workup

Distribution and pattern; blood glucose, B12, TSH, kidney function; refer based on suspicion.

red flags

Sudden onset paresthesias with weakness or facial/speech impairment → suspicion of stroke.

Standard management

  • Treat the cause — glycemic control, B12, etc.
  • Gabapentin/pregabalin — neuropathic pain
