Why it occurs

  • Viral laryngitis
  • Vocal abuse
  • Reflux
  • Vocal cord nodules/polyps
  • Laryngeal neoplasia
  • Appellant's paralysis

Initial workup

If it lasts >2-3 weeks, laryngoscopy (rule out tumor), especially in smokers.

red flags

Dysphonia >3 weeks in a smoker, or with dysphagia/cervical mass → refer to ENT (rule out neoplasia).

Standard management

  • Vocal rest + hydration — 1st measure
  • IBP — yes laryngopharyngeal reflux
