Initial workup

Sediment and urine culture; cytology, ultrasound and cystoscopy if macroscopic without infection; kidney function.

red flags

Painless macroscopic hematuria in >40 years or smoker → rule out urothelial tumor.

Standard management

  • Treat the cause — antibiotic if UTI; study if it is painless
