Why it occurs

  • Stroke / central neurological injury
  • Neuropathy or myopathy
  • Ionic alterations (K)
  • Myasthenia
  • Asthenia due to systemic disease

Initial workup

Distinguish central/peripheral/muscular; CK, ionogram, TSH; refer to neurology.

red flags

Acute focal weakness, ascending or with respiratory/swallowing involvement → neurological emergency.

Standard management

  • Treat the cause — etiological
  • Correct electrolytes — yes hypo/hyperkalemia
