Why it occurs

Initial workup
Total bilirubin and hours of life (nomogram); group and Coombs; rule out early cause.
red flags
Jaundice in the first 24 hours of life, very intense or prolonged → risk of kernicterus: urgent evaluation.
Standard management
- Phototherapy — according to bilirubin nomogram
- Exsanguinotransfusion — very high levels
